This is an information and discussion list for people who are fed up with the problems of living in rental housing in Toronto, whether social or private.
We are not in a housing crisis, we are in a housing crunch, dealing with problems that have been building for many years because of irresponsible government. The one way to end it is to get new forms of social housing built. The only way get it built right and run right is to give the tenants control over building and running it.
We need new ideas about building and managing private and social housing, including;
• right to manage laws and right to own laws, enabling public and private tenants to take over running their buildings.
• a revival of the co-operative housing movement, encouraging people to found new co-operative and co-ownership projects.
• full funding of co-operative and assisted ownership housing programs.
• an end to the false tenant participation system in Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), which puts any tenant representative in a conflict of interest. The tenants should have a majority on the board of TCHC, elected directly by all the tenants.
• an end to the city funding false tenant groups to attack and disrupt real ones, and so they will tell the city bureaucracy what it wants to hear.
• creating a tenant advisory council of real tenants chosen by other tenants in real, unmanipulated elections.
• creating a system of rental inspectors to enforce housing standards on social and private landlords.
• an end to unfair taxes and levies on rental housing.
• use the equity in social housing buildings to make needed repairs, then go after the province for it. We should not be living in collapsing housing just because two levels of government are fighting with each other.
